Hi, my name’s Mark Bauer and I’m running for U.S. Congress in Texas District 24.
I’m running as an Independent because I’ve learned as a journalist for the last 10 years that neither party has a monopoly on the good ideas. And oftentimes our two-party system emphasizes more who we stand against rather than what ideas we stand for.
And so a major emphasis of my campaign is getting back to basics. Getting back to trying to understand one another, trying to understand why it is that we want the things that we want and trying to understand why it is that we do the things that we do. I think it’s a lot easier to try to work toward common solutions when we feel like we’re all operating on the same page.
And that’s not just political speak. That’s my bottomline. It’s how I’ve lived my life. I earned my journalism degree from the University of Texas at Arlington, where I learned to value truthfulness, integrity and transparency. I became a journalist in the first place out of my desire to serve my community and my campaign for Congress is a continuation of that desire.
I think a lot of the current political dysfunction that we see today is born out of false choice: us vs them, left vs right, Democrat vs Republican. And I think if we can learn to understand one another, we’ll find that we don’t have to settle for things like secure borders or a pathway to citizenship. We don’t have to settle for high testing standards and learning how to trust educators on how to most effectively teach in their classrooms. I don’t believe that we have to choose between workers’ rights and economic growth.
As a journalist, I’m trained to go where the answers lead. I’m trained to evolve and adapt based on new information that I’m taking in, and so I have no problem going back and forth between the political aisles in order to draft and support legislation that works for the economic prosperity of all North Texans.
And so if you believe as I do that a third way can work for our common good, I hope that you join me in supporting and spreading that message all the way up until Election Day in November.
