I just had a good discussion with a friend who was talking about the possibility of getting a life coach—someone who can take what seem like insurmountable goals in his head and put them on paper to help him identify what he can do TODAY to work toward achieving what he wants.
That incremental goal-making is what undergirds all growth. Babies don’t come out of the womb able to crawl, and there’s a phase of development we call babies “Toddlers” because there’s a lot of waddling and falling associated with their transition to walking.
We allow for this kind of incremental growth through most phases in our life, but the idea of setbacks associated with growth becomes more unsettling the older we get.
We’ve taken this same fear around growth and carried it into politics. We are all-or-nothing when it comes to policymaking. We don’t account for the grey—the reality that exists between where we are and where we want to go. That’s why we have so much ANXIETY around the current state of world affairs. Everything looks so dagum insurmountable, and the major parties would rather leverage your anxieties for their gain.
You want to make progress as a nation? Stop labeling your fellow Americans as your enemies. Take inventory of where you have influence NOW to make the world a better place. And anyone who leverages your fears about tomorrow to control you today isn’t fit to govern.
